History

Carrollwood began in the late 1950s when Sunstate Builders, owned by Matt Jetton, purchased hundreds of acres of orange groves near Lake Carroll.  This area is now called Original Carrollwood.  Sales were challenging early on but took a turn for the better when the State of Florida created the University of South Florida just a few miles away. The development became popular with professors and administrators from the newly built University of South Florida campus. The community went on to earn honors such as U.S. Subdivision of the Year by the National Association of Homebuilders in 1961.

Matt Jetton created Carrollwood Village in 1971 and it began with only a few homes, a golf course and dirt roads.
